A memorial; just a few songs (as always, they belong to their owners, not me) that bring to mind, while calming it, someone who passed away. Yes, she may have been my husband’s grandmother, but in far too many ways, she reminded me of my own. The only difference is that I lost my grandmother about half my life ago when I was 16. There is something adorable about little German grandmothers, who of course do not like being called grandmother, as that is too old for ladies like them. (No matter their actual age) Instead, they become everyone’s Omi or Nanny, no matter the age or vague family connection.
Many of my memories have faded, or mixed up in different hodgepodge stories, but I still remember certain things. Like the rings and dresses my grandmother favored, and the time she backed the car into the house, just a little bit, to make sure there was enough room in the big driveway for everyone else. Oh and being taught growing up, never to ask my grandmother how to spell things for school, or to at least get it checked before trying to turn it in. After all, phonetic spelling was her specialty.
Just ask the “Kitschon” window screens, all still baring the tape labels she made for them. And if you think that is only a cowinkydink, I have old cat photo albums to prove the existence of Pipshon, Lipschon, and Bipschon. Stick to what you know, right?
In loving memory of some lovely “Don’t call me Grandma” Grandmothers who I dearly miss. May we be as blessed to make it into our 70’s and beyond too…
