If you know anything about me, outside of my working on being a publishable author, you might remember that I am a library lifer. Meaning most of my career has been in library land. I’ve done a range of work, from shelving books, to checking them in or out, to behind the scenes processing them, and even handling the bills around buying them too.
So it feels impossible for me to miss library week. The theme this year is drawn to the library, and that seems fitting for this playlist too.
This Music Monday I have bookish type characters for you to get to know. Those that might enjoy a trip to the library or at least a good book store. And of course, why they are like that. As always, I don’t own the music, it’s just for getting to know the characters with their styles and entertainment.
Of course we start with our MC Tweety.
She’s the reason the whole book world exists. Their stories are out there simply because she had a mind for stories from devouring books as a youth. Sees them everywhere. And Tweety also kept journals of notes, on patrons, on her feelings, everything that happened on a day to day basis. A certain someone who spends a lot of alone time with her at night convinced Tweety to turn that into something more. And the book turned into something big, partially because people try to link who the band man really is. The story is as much about her life as it is about a love life.
Story Of My Life – Bon Jovi
And our side character who could totally be an MC? Sly.
This is that certain someone she works with. Tweety gives Sly a lot of nicknames. Batman, Book Baby Daddy, Dictionary or Thesaurus… Various terms of bratty endearment, really. Sly is the most eloquent and polished of the group. That guy that uses big words and knows what they mean. If he wasn’t in the night life world, he’d make a great editor or maybe write a lot of thesis type papers. He’s the reader, with a love of a good epic journey, and description for days. Which might be how he knows how to be perfectly nondescript and shadowy. Invisible, yet with his own following, being a male Tweety, her pupil that matches her hostess skills in his own time.
Both Tweety and Sly enjoy reading people like books. But this song is more Sly’s style.
Read It In Books – Echo & The Bunnymen
Nira makes this list too, because he’s very into anime and visual art books. He’s found in Graphic Novels, Comic books, and occasionally gets mad when his sketches get disrupted by patrons looking for help in the middle of his grand ideas.
In many ways, Nira gives off funny anime character slice of life vibes. You never know if he’s serious or joking, much like this song.
I’ll Never Forget The Day I Read A Book – Jimmy Durante
A later met character is from the realm of our other general MC, Woods’ sister Melody.
We don’t get to meet her fully until later in the series, but she proves quickly how valuable it is to be a reader, a deeply devoted fan of a few types of books. Her skills make her a great detective, helping her brother and his friend Remmy find lost things. She knows her brother’s life better than he does, from the book she read, knowing him and feeling like she knows the other players. In many ways, Melody is a voice like a reader of the book placed in the book.
And she’s not very far off, except her efforts to make friends with her somewhat heroine figure are often thwarted by the handsomely annoying brother’s friend. When she’s focused, she’s your true crime, mystery junkie type. Detective Melody if she could. Her current case is her brother’s love life.
Storybook Love – Mark Knopfler
And another one from the other MCs world? Woods is part of a band. Over time, some of those band men have found relationships that last. So, the drummer Scotty is a reader from his partner. Sometimes we might see it, sometimes it’s just part of the backstory world, but Scotty goes from the guy they tease to a strong musician in his own rights. He becomes the kind of guy you want in a lead singer, even though he’s not. You might not even see him behind his drum kit, yet he’s the dark romance dude. Musician romances? Yes. Spicy? Only if they can act it out together…
That’s the dude behind the drum kit now… Hard to imagine someone once suggesting he had weak wrists and not enough passion…
Even so, Scotty could pick a song in his band’s style, or he could pick one that shows appreciation to the girl he loves to read with…
Books Of Fantasy – Mark Diamond
And a special add on teaser song for my readers here? Our very own book boyfriend MC Woods. He is not what one would call a reader, not by a long shot. Not until one book sets him on a path to see the author he used to call his music muse.
Fact and Fiction can be a very fine line, especially when you feel like you are the Main Character in someone else’s book, and they tell your story wrong…
The Book I Read – Talking Heads
So, if you were getting to know these characters, what would you recommend they read next? I might screen books in the comments for these characters… They gotta do something while living rent free in my head for forever right?
