Last Music Monday, I teased characters from the other MCs’ world. Today I thought it best to meet the band themselves, with an interview of sorts. There are 4 members, and for the 5th song, it’ll be their type of sound. But first, I have to say that they are not a real band, nor do I own any of the music. This is to meet the members based on what they are like, not what they do exactly.
Woods is our MC, the one tied to Tweety for many reasons. He’s a guitarist, and has a British accent he uses at will for flirtatious effects. Pair that with the Billy Idol looks? Dangerous musician indeed.
Interviewer: There were reports that you would have given up on music in the past, before you were put together in this band by Martin. Can you tell us what made you keep trying? And what’s your inspiration for the lyrics you come up with? I gotta tell you, they speak to love and heartache in such catchy rock and roll tunes.
Woods: (smirks) Is it too easy to say the ladies keep me going? Being recognized by people I didn’t know, challenged in ways I hadn’t been before… that’s what made me keep going, and Martin gave me a break after hearing me play some. Had some good people in my corner, pushing for success. All it took was getting on that stage one more time. Everything else came from that, including the music I play now.
I: What was the song that got you your breakthrough? Was it the first thing you played Martin?
W: No, not the first thing I played Martin, but Crazy on You by Heart has a special place in my heart as my breakthrough moment..
Crazy On You – Heart
Band mates Josh and Scotty nudge at each other, whispering about something about that song, but when Woods turns, Josh just mentions how great the opening riff is.
I: You sound like a leader and sing a lot Woods, how come you aren’t the lead singer of the band?
Brandon: Because that’s my job, both to sing and lead the band…
The tension over this remark is somewhat palpable. Scotty hooks Brandon around the neck.
Scotty: You do a fine job leading all the women backstage. Does that count?
I: What’s your lead singer style inspiration Brandon?
B: I loved the hair metal bands, you know? We started as a sort of cover band, to get the attention of the label while we started writing our own stuff, and sang tons of AC/DC, Crue, a little Poison… It helps shape the kind of sound we are overall. Those front men were loud and out there, that’s what I wanted to be too. Some people say it’s aggressive flirting or something about ego, but it’s not. I’m just a front man who knows how to be an entertaining front man.
Piece Of Your Action – Motley Crue
I: Is that where the showmanship comes from in the band overall? Often there’s videos of Scotty drumming for the band, and the drumstick tricks get a lot of views.
Scotty: I don’t know if all of our tricks come from Brandon’s front man influences, but for me? Early on, I was reminded that even though drummers are the guys in the background, they have to control the beat. A heartbeat, as it was best put. As the rest of the guys grew in stage presence, I worked on slowing or teasing that heartbeat. If I change the way your body pulses, I have you hooked and amazing. Not bad for a guy behind a kit, right?
Boss’s Daughter – Pop Evil ft Mick Mars
Josh: Man, that’s the one I would have used.
S: You have the nickname Angus. You can play anything AC/DC now, you gotta let me have one here and there.
I: (laughs lightly) I was going to follow up with that question for you Josh. Many people do call you Angus or Mick Mars, because your skills are in their league. How do you feel about that? Do you have a preference?
J: If you would have asked me what you asked Woods, I would have picked his song. The truth is that I got my nickname from a mistake. My skills were up there, but on that audition, so were my nerves. So it took a long time to earn the right to wear a legendary nickname like that. Had to make the people that believed in us proud like that, you know? So, now? Being called Mick or Angus is a huge compliment to my skills, and my work in this band.
Back In Black – AC/DC
I: We do appreciate each one of your talents, and together you guys make a strongly successful band. Will you be closing the interview with a teaser of the type of sound the upcoming album will be like?
W: I wouldn’t say the whole album will be like this…
B: playfully but aggressively shoves Woods I do think this would be a single song though. A certain someone writes from their feelings…
